The Innocence Project’s data indicates that nationally, for every ten people executed, one person is exonerated.
Is that a rate of success we can live with? No it is not.
Unfortunately, New Mexico, like our sister states has also falsely accused and wrongfully convicted the innocent. Including:
- Thomas Gladish,
- Richard Greer,
- Ronald Keine,
- Clarence Smith,
- Ballinger Gene Curtis,
- William Smith,
- Alfredo Torres, and
- many others…some not yet exonerated.
Some of the most common reasons for wrongful convictions are: Mistaken Witness Identification, False Confession, Perjury or False Accusation, False or Misleading Forensic Evidence, Official Misconduct, and Inadequate Legal Defense.
Inadequate legal defense really compounds the problems in our criminal justice system, and can lead to the innocent being convicted.
