The Las Cruces Sun News reported a 50-year-old Silver City man died Friday while at work at the Tyrone Mine.
Richard Juan Gallegos Sr. collapsed at approximately 3:30 p.m. near the end of his work shift, Freeport MacMoRan spokesman Gabe Doak said without confirming the man’s name or age, but Gallegos’ wife Alia confirmed his identity to the Sun-News.
The cause of death remains under investigation, but working in a mine is one of the most dangerous occupations in the United States.
Workplaces have the obligation to ensure reasonable safety of its employees. When it fails to do so, the consequences can be catastrophic.
