In May of 2013, at the end of a bench trial, a federal judge cleared the Las Cruces Police Department of liability in the 2010 death of a samurai sword-wielding man who was tragically shot and killed by a Las Cruces Police officer.
The lawsuit alleged that City was liable for not providing adequate training to LCPD officers.
This is not the only officer-involved shooting this community has confronted. There have been many police officers and sheriff deputies involved in shootings over the last few years in Las Cruces and the surrounding area. Many of the officer-involved shootings have involved victims who are mentally ill.
