New Mexico’s Children, Youth and Families Department says a new juvenile detention center in southern New Mexico will be called the Lincoln Pines Youth Center.
The facility is near Fort Stanton and is scheduled to open in October to house two dozen medium risk juvenile offenders.
The center is at the location of the former Camp Sierra Blanca, a state juvenile justice facility that closed four years ago.
New Mexico’s treatment of juvenile criminal defendants has not always been above reproach. There is a long list of detention officers and others involved in the juvenile system abusing the incarcerated children. In 2011 an Albuquerque youth detention facility supervisor was arrested for allegedly sexually abusing female juvenile inmates.
Besides sexual assaults on inmates, there have been documented cases of physical abuse on the children inmates and lack of educational resources.
Hopefully this new facility, with such a small number of inmates, New Mexico will not have some of the same problems with this facility as others.
Criminal Defense Lawyers work to keep their clients out of these facilities whenever possible and Personal Injury Lawyers help their clients when abuse occurs inside a facility.
