Albuquerque’s number of sworn officers climbed to 1,099 in June 2010 but has fallen to 939 officers by August 2013.
This is in part due to declining benefits, but may also be due to poor moral brought on by numerous successful civil rights suits.
Civil rights attorneys have brought many successful cases against the Albuquerque police department for violations of citizens’ civil rights. And the police department seems to be unable to rectify some of the problems that contribute to these wrongful actions by officers.
The mayor of Albuquerque has stated his goal is to expand the police force without compromising the standards for hiring, but more important is proper training once an officer is hired. Proper training can insure citizens’ rights are protected and reduce the number of law suits.
