The Chicago Cun-Times reports Chicago taxpayers will spend $12.3 million to compensate two more exonerated inmates who assert they were tortured into false confessions by former Lieutenant Jon Burge. This brings the total settlements expected to be approved for police abuse and misconduct cases this year to at least $77 million.
It is also the third time that cases settled by Chicago’s Mayor have spared state authorities from answering questions under oath about allegations that they failed to investigate police torture allegations against Burge and participated in a conspiracy to cover it up.
Aggressive and thorough criminal defense lawyer work along with similar civil rights lawyer work is the only way to effectively combat police corruption and abuse.
Law enforcement in New Mexico sometimes also engages in this type of behavior and that needs to stop.
